In 1951 pitman-turned-novelist Sid Chaplin was commissioned to write The Lakes to Tyneside, one of 13 guides to the UK’s regions published by Collins to mark the Festival of Britain. Criss-crossing ‘my north country’, Chaplin sought to pin down what made his home patch so special.
In the summer of 2014 playwright and screenwriter Michael Chaplin followed in his father’s footsteps and made a journey of his own in a series of six walks. Starting on Holy Island and finishing in Durham City, he visited communities and talked to their people to find out whether the North East remains the coherent region of the early Fifties, what its future might be, and how seven days on the hoof presented his late father’s life and work in a wholly new light.
